What Is the MK Shortbread Medallion? The Story Behind MyKoekie™’s Signature

Every MyKoekie™ cookie arrives with something on top of it.

A small, handcrafted shortbread coin – stamped with “MK” – pressed onto every single cookie before it bakes. It is not decoration. It is not a gimmick. It is a ritual. And it is the mark that separates a MyKoekie™ from every other cookie you have ever eaten.

This is the story of the MK Shortbread Medallion.

What Is It, Exactly?

The MK Shortbread Medallion is a handcrafted shortbread coin baked onto the top of every MyKoekie™ cookie. It is made separately, stamped with “MK”, and placed by hand onto each koekie before it goes into the oven.

It bakes into the cookie. It becomes part of it. But it is also distinct enough to be eaten on its own — and that is the point.

How to Eat It (and Why It Matters)

Before you take a bite of the cookie itself, you eat the medallion first.

The shortbread cleanses the palate. It is subtle — buttery, light, not sweet-heavy — designed to prepare your senses for what is about to come. After the medallion, the cookie. The gooey centre. The depth of flavour. The full experience.

It is a small ritual. But rituals are what separate an experience from just eating a thing.

No other cookie brand in South Africa does this. The MK Shortbread Medallion is uniquely, entirely MyKoekie™.

Why We Created It

When MyKoekie™ made its luxury pivot — when the brand moved from playful pop-up cookie stall to something more considered and elevated — we needed a signature. Something that would mark every cookie as definitively ours. Something that communicated quality before the first bite.

The MK Shortbread Medallion was that answer.

It communicates: this was made with intention. This cookie was not assembled. It was crafted. Every single one.

It is also a tribute. The handwritten “MK” on the medallion is a nod to the brand’s roots — to Dottie de Kock’s recipes, to the legacy that every batch of MyKoekie™ cookies carries. The “MK” is her initials. It is ours. And now, with every order, it becomes yours too.

To get the full MK Medallion experience, warm your cookie first.

15–20 seconds in the microwave. Not long. Just enough to activate the gooey centre and soften the medallion slightly. Then eat the medallion. Then the cookie.

This is how MyKoekie™ was meant to be eaten. Do not skip the warm-up. Do not skip the medallion. The sequence exists for a reason.

If It Doesn’t Have the Medallion, It Isn’t MyKoekie™

This is important.

The MK Shortbread Medallion is not optional. It is not a limited-edition feature. Every single MyKoekie™ cookie — regardless of flavour, regardless of order size – is crowned with the medallion. It is the mark of quality. The mark of authenticity.

If it doesn’t have the medallion, it isn’t a MyKoekie™.
